A Wedding in the Snow by Sirastudio, Professional Photographers in Harrogate

Posted

As wedding photographers in Harrogate, one of the most unpredictable areas for weather, we are used to going with the flow when it comes to rearranging shoots at the last minute. Waking up to a white out in Harrogate on the morning of Rachael and Ben’s wedding in Ripon, we had mixed feelings – yes it was pretty, but realistically, you wouldn’t want to be standing around for group photos in the still-falling snow, getting shiny new shoes all wet and sludgy.

Despite the sleet and snow, all was not lost. We knew that the interior of Allhallowgate Methodist Church, Ripon was absolutely beautiful and would lend itself perfectly to a few internal group shots, set up after the wedding ceremony. We also knew the interior of the Majestic Hotel, where the wedding breakfast would take place, was simply stunning.

So…. getting to the church around 2 hours early, (just in case the roads were bad), we had a word with the minister of the church, to ask permission to set up a group shots that had been planned for outside. He was exceptionally friendly and agreed it was the best idea, given the circumstances. After a lovely wedding ceremony (where one of us took reportage photos from above, and the other from below at the side, we) gathered  the guests together at the front of the church for a relaxed group portrait before we chanced our luck with the snow on the external steps for the all-important confetti shots.

Rachael looked absolutely stunning in a cream bridal dress with a modern twist on 1920′s styling. Her two bridesmaids cut a dash in dark purple, and Ben and his entire crew looked like a dream in matching, very trendy brown suits with 3/4 length jackets. All eyes were on Rachael and Ben, who looked every inch the loving, happy and very glamorous couple, though their little boy Freddie almost stole the show a couple of times just by being uber-gorgeous!

The interior of the church provides an unusual backdrop for a group shot

The reception was held at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate, a sumptuous hotel dripping with Art Deco features. We had bought a white umbrella to protect Rachael from the nasty weather between the car and the church, but liked it so much we decided we should ask Rachael to use it pose for some photographs inside the Majestic, during the drinks reception. We think it looks great! We had a lot of fun setting up some bride and groom portraits before the specific group photography took place just before everyone went in for the wedding breakfast.

We like to do the odd photo where the bridal bouquet is the only part of the image left in colour. It adds a little je ne sais quoi, as long as it’s not overdone elsewhere in the album.

Of course, there was a little extra umbrella use going on in the corner of the room, and so we found another picture opportunity while the older guests hurried through to the receiving line.

More good use of the umbrella!

We were almost thankful that snow stopped us going outside for traditional group shots because although the hotel gardens would have certainly been the preferred backdrop originally,  the interior of the Majestic Hotel made for some amazing wedding photographs. Something a little different. Which everybody likes.

The trend for cupcakes was evident at Rachael and Ben’s wedding – an amazing display of the most delicious cupcakes took a prominent position near the top table. Needless to say they didn’t last for long! (Thanks Rach and Ben for the wonderful meal too).

A delicious array of cupcakes replaces the traditional fruit cake. Yum…..

We always try and capture as much detail as possible – no mean feat on an action-packed wedding day. With all those people to talk to in the heady swirl of the day, its good to have a reminder of all the work that goes into coordinating all that loveliness in the wedding album.

For the evening, we took along our starry background to capture some relaxed, professional portraits of guests as well as the bride, groom and their families. It makes for a little extra fun, and looks great in the wedding album. A beautiful mix of traditional, formal groups, reportage photography of bride, groom, guests, black and white and colour, and informal portraiture. Well, why not?
