Awards videos – the human touch

Posted

Every year, we are humbled by the amazing people we film for the story videos shown at the fabulous Stray FM Local Hero Awards evening – this year at Rudding Park Hotel in Harrogate. It is our great pleasure to create the videos of the award winners that are shown at the awards evening.

Our role involves meeting the nominees, understanding their stories through interviewing them and perhaps friends or members of their families, allowing them to open up about their experiences, gathering illustrative footage and then editing the footage into short story videos to explain to the audience just why they deserve an award. Of course, the winners never set out to win awards, and are often surprised that they have been nominated. Sometimes they have undergone traumatic injuries, sometimes they empower others, sometimes they raise funds for charities. All of them are incredible and want to help others. It’s our job to represent the award winner, to empathise, and to create an emotive and sometimes in-depth and quite personal insight into their lives that will connect with the audience within around 3 minutes per video.

Whilst we cannot take credit for the amazing stories, we like to think that we are quite good at the other stuff. And as always we are blown away by the spirit, the enthusiasm, the courage and the determination that all the nominees present. A massive well done to everyone who was nominated. It’s was an privilege to meet you.

Below are two of the videos we created and some comments we received after the awards evening:

Parent of the Year:

Sarah Barry (Stray FM): Thank you again for everything you have done, the videos were fabulous, they just get better every year and we’ve had so many comments about how good they were.  Big respect from me and all the Stray team.

Patrick Dunlop (Stray FM): I’ve just been watching the videos again and can’t get over how good they are. Amazing work from you two! I’ll be honest, Claire’s video had me in floods of tears after a tiring and emotional week!

Nick Hancock (Stray FM): Thank you both for all your hard work. Once again the films totally made the night.

Shona Mellon (mum of child of courage award winner): Thank you so much for today. It was lovely to meet you all. Oliver was so so happy after you left, I think your whole approach made him feel extra special. He even said it “doesn’t matter if he doesn’t win because he already feels like a VIP”.

Detective Inspector Steve Menzies (Charity Fundraiser Award Winner): Hi guys, I just wanted to thank you both for the amazing video that you put together for the Stray FM Local Hero Awards – it was excellent. The video made the night extra special and really portrayed what the Craven Police Charity Fund is about.

Tim Naughton (Lights 4 Fun – Event Sponsor): Your incredible videos made last night very , very special . The emotion you carefully carried into room was really powerful and thought provoking.   Massive congratulations from Jo and I.

Naomi Dannenberg (Volunteer of the Year Award Winner): Thank you so much for making such an easily accessible video of the work I do and why. I’ve had offers of donations already which will really help parents in our group. The video will be a really useful introductory tool to help gain funding.
